In Astrology, the luminaries are the Sun and Moon. They're called "luminaries" because they are the primary sources of light in the sky. They are not planets however they fulfil distinct roles and they are fundamental in understanding astrology and the birth chart. The Sun represents the external self, the ego and the sense of self whilst the Moon represents the internal self, and our emotional responses and needs. In the following sections, I will summarise the significations of the Sun and Moon in astrology and explain why we use them.
The Sun: your ego and self-expression
In astrology, the Sun represents your outer self, ego, identity, self-expression and life purpose. As a source of both light and warmth, it reflects your conscious identity, the energy we radiate and how we wish to be recognised in our life. Venus naturally rules over the Fixed Earth sign Taurus (the bull), associated with security, luxury and the material world and the Cardinal Air sign Libra, the diplomatic initiator of balance, peace and social cohesion within interpersonal relationships. Taurus is the nocturnal/internal (material) side of Venus, whereas Libra is the diurnal/external (other-focused) side of Venus.
Venus usually spends 3-4 weeks in one zodiac sign. However, it can spend up to 5 months in a sign when retrograde, this occurs once every 18 months. Venus is never more than 2 signs adjacent from the Sun.
